RWE Dea makes another gas discovery in the Norwegian Sea
Oslo: RWE Dea Norge is pleased to announce that the company once again has made a gas discovery in the Norwegian Sea. The discovery significantly increases the commercial potential of the Zidane field.

RWE Dea Norge AS, operator of Production Licence (PL) 435, is in the process of finishing the drilling of exploration well 6507/7-15 S on the Zidane 2 prospect. The discovery is RWE Dea’s second in PL435 and increases the total value of the licence. Preliminary estimates of the size of the discovery range between 4 and 13 billion standard cubic metres (GSm3) of recoverable gas. The well is located 3.5 kilometres from the Zidane 1 discovery well (6507/7-14 S), and approximately 15 kilometres northwest of the Heidrun field.

“This is good news indeed. By developing Zidane, we will get our first own-operated Norwegian field on stream, and we have high ambitions in both exploration and production for the years to come”, says Ralf to Baben, Chief Operating Officer, RWE Dea AG.
Primary objective for the well was to prove hydrocarbons in Middle Jurassic rocks (the Fangst group). The secondary objective was to prove hydrocarbons in the Lange and Tilje formations. The well encountered gas in a 140 metres column in the Fangst group, and hydrocarbon bearing rocks were also encountered in the secondary objectives.

”After 9 months of well planning and 3 months of safe drilling operations, we are extremely pleased to have found gas in the Zidane area again. The project team is looking forward to analysing the results and moving our field development project into the next phase”, says Hans-Joachim Polk, Managing Director RWE Dea Norge.

The Zidane 2 well is the second exploration well in PL435, which was awarded in the Awards in Predefined Areas round for 2006 (APA 2006). The well was drilled to a total vertical depth of 4,534 metres below the sea surface, and it was terminated in the Early Jurassic Tilje formation. Water depth at the site is 399 metres. The well will now be permanently plugged and abandoned. Well 6507/7-15 S was drilled with the semi-submersible drilling rig West Alpha.
